For all the talk of a New South, employment opportunities for blacks were limited. At the top of the socio-economic structure were teachers, ministers, and a few professionals. Three men in town claimed to be doctors, but only one, W. A. J. Bullock, was able to write prescriptions for regulated drugs. The others used patent medicines and foul-smelling home remedies.

Many black families who lived there a century later could trace their ancestry to those people and their freed descendants. In that regard, many African Americans had lived there much longer than the whites, most of whom came to the area only after about 1899. After the abolition of slavery, black emigrants came of their own free will, and they carried the hopes of free people with them. Their migration was proof that they did not accept the tenets of the Old South. By 1930 these numbered 1,625 in Chickasha, five of whom were the Sipuels.
