Thus melodic material, as it is being generated through collective improvisation, determines form. Such musicians, who often use no precomposed melodies or formal arrangements, may begin a performance without knowing in advance how the music will sound. As described above, the free-form, collectively improvised approach is perhaps the most demanding upon the musicians, since they have little or no pre-established guidelines and they must be conscious of creating both the melodic content and the form.

Approaches to improvisation differ, depending on the style of jazz. For example, a hard bop soloist creates a melodic line that is coherent with preset chord changes. Out jazz performers, however, may incorporate the free-form, collectively improvised approach, which they view as an extension of traditional approaches to improvisation in jazz. Labels Based on the Politicization of Out Jazz The terms black jazz, black classical music, and fire music have certain political connotations. 18 They were coined in the 1960s as a response to social and racial attitudes that prevailed during this turbulent decade.

Composer and violinist Billy Bang, for example, writes out most of the parts that each instrument will play during the theme sections of a given composition.
