I arrived at Enayet Karim’s beautiful house in the afternoon. The whole family was very happy to see me. Mrs Karim immediately set the table and soon we discovered that both of us were natives of Chittagong which added some intimacy to our relationship. I quickly became a family member - that was surprising to me in the context of my experience with government officials who preferred to keep to themselves. The next surprising thing was that everybody was sharing their thoughts as if everybody’s opinion mattered.

This may strike Westerners as old-fashioned, but that is our traditional way. I never questioned the propriety of arranged marriages. In addition, I had no experience of women, and I was terribly shy around them. We are quite prudish and conservative in Bangladesh in general, and all the more so in Chittagong District which is one of the more religious in the country. Until I married I was a total innocent in matters of the heart. And in my family we never discussed intimate things openly. In 1967, I was seated in the Vanderbilt library one day, reading, when a beautiful girl with shoulder-length red hair and blue eyes came up to me and asked where I was from.

With the support of my central committee, I engineered a coup d’etat within my student party, and ousted senior functionaries who were manipulating us. It had been quite a feather in my cap to be general secretary, but to use the post to challenge the status quo created a political bombshell in student politics, which sent ripples all through the Chittagong District. Ever since then I had always tried to steer an independent course. So although while in America I voiced my opposition to the Vietnam war, I always tried to keep an open mind and not merely to spout what was fashionable or to veer into groupthink.
